Professional theatre returns to the central region with the 12th Season of Beyond The Overpass Theatre Festival. Gander performances begin on June 23rd with a very special, one-night-only performance of “The Door You Came In: Songs and Stories from the Danger Tree, “ by Douglas Cameron and David MacFarlane. “The story of a Newfoundland family and the war that changed it forever.” David Macfarlane, the author of The Danger Tree, has collaborated with the gifted musician, composer, and songwriter, Douglas Cameron, to create a ninety-minute performance of spoken word and music that, in its initial productions, has earned immediate standing ovations from its audiences. “The Door You Came In” draws on The Danger Tree but casts the award-winning family memoir in a new and moving contemporary light.  A must see for all Newfoundlanders.

On July 7th we launch the musical comedy, Petty Cash: The Has Been Who Never Was by Bert Cashmere. One man’s laugh-out-loud, music-filled journey to become the greatest country music impersonator the world has ever seen. Love, power, money, and heartbreak fuel this story that will see the audience cheering for “the has been who never was.”

On July 15th it’s Noel Coward’s classic, Blithe Spirit. A love triangle between a man, his wife, and his dead wife.  Both women battle for possession of their husband and hilarity ensues. This farce is sure to raise your spirits and see you leave the theatre laughing.

On July 22nd it’s the worldwide hit, “Nunsense,” by Dan Goggin. The story follows the crazy antics of 5 nuns from the Little Sisters of Hoboken convent. When their cook accidentally serves up some tainted soup, 52 of the sisters meet an untimely end. Left to fend for themselves, and still having to put to rest 4 of their fellow Sisters, currently stored in the kitchen freezer, the cash strapped Sisters decide to put on a benefit performance of the musical Grease in order to raise the required money before the health department discovers their secret. Ridiculously funny and sure to be a hit of the summer season.

On August 12th we have the pleasure of hosting a staged workshop production of Artistic Fraud’s, “Between Breaths.” Written by award winning playwright, Robert Chafe, and directed by the award winning and incomparable, Jillian Keiley, the play deals with Dr. Jon Lien, well known in Newfoundland as, “The Whale Man.” This production features 3 of Newfoundland’s finest performers, Steve O’Connell, Bernie Stapleton, and Daryl Hopkins.
